| She was the oldest daughter of William Byrd An early American Colonial father & founder of the city of Richmond They say she haunts the grounds of Westover Located on the James River Her erratic appearances never threaten anyone Seems she made a vow to be a friendly ghost Oh Evelyn was born in Westover In 1707 She lived in Virginia ‘til she was ten They sent her to England for an education At 16 years she fell in love with a man Her father deemed unsuitable for her hand It was an older man Oh Evelyn always smiles When she makes an occasional appearance On the Westover grounds or in the plantation house Oh Evelyn’s usually dressed in white Or sometimes lace & green velvet With her hair pulled back tight she’s really not such a fright Her father had a will that would not bend & he forced the courtship to come to an end So at age nineteen its Virginia again She withdrew from life but kept one friend Her best friend Anne from the next plantation For eleven years she withered away Until Evelyn finally died Prior to her death the girls made a pact That after death they’d both come back And not long after Evelyn died Anne was the first to see her ghost Under the tulip trees in the poplar grove She smiled at Anne and then disappeared Oh Evelyn always smiles When she makes an occasional appearance On the Westover grounds or in the plantation house Oh Evelyn’s usually dressed in white Or sometimes lace & green velvet With her hair pulled back tight she’s really not such a fright Oh Evelyn doesn’t look like a ghost When you see her there’s no fog or smoke She’s often been mistaken for a guest of the house She’s been seen walking with another figure Perhaps it’s the ghost of her best friend Anne Or more likely her long lost man Oh Evelyn always smiles When she makes an occasional appearance On the Westover grounds or in the plantation house Oh Evelyn’s usually dressed in white Or sometimes lace & green velvet With her hair pulled back tight she’s really not such a fright . |
